Large-Capacity Washers by Store

What typically fits
Pick the machine by the load
General guidance, not a guarantee: thickness and fabric matter as much as size. Load loosely to about three quarters full so the laundry can tumble, and check care labels first.
- 20–30 lbA regular week of clothes, towels, a twin or full comforter, or a few throw blankets.
- 40 lb and upA king or queen comforter with room to tumble; the usual guidance for a king.
- 60–80 lbSeveral comforters, sleeping bags or a pile of blankets; an 80 lb washer takes about eight household loads of clothes in one cycle.
- 120 lbThe biggest jobs: multiple comforters and blankets at once, or a very large load of the same colors.
Tips for big loads
- Use less detergent than you would per basket; thick bedding holds on to soap.
- Split a big wet load across two dryers rather than packing one.
- Check the middle of comforters before you leave; cool spots are still damp.
- The last wash starts one hour before closing at every store.
