The short answer
Twenty pounds of dry laundry is typically about two average home washer loads, or one large, full laundry basket that is heavy to carry, or a tall kitchen trash bag stuffed full of clothes. For one or two people, it is often around a week's worth of everyday laundry, but that varies a lot with what you wear.
Approximate weights of common items
These are rough, typical figures for dry items. Heavier fabrics and larger sizes weigh more.
- T-shirt: about a quarter to half a pound.
- Pair of jeans: about one to two pounds.
- Sweatshirt or hoodie: about one to one and a half pounds.
- Bath towel: about one to two pounds, depending on size and thickness.
- Queen sheet set: roughly three to four pounds.
- Underwear and socks: very light individually, but they add up across a week.
Putting it together
A practical example of roughly 20 pounds: a week of shirts and underwear for one person, a few pairs of jeans, a couple of hoodies, four or five bath towels and a sheet set. Swap the towels for more T-shirts and the pile looks bigger but weighs less. Towels, denim and sweatshirts are what make a bag heavy.
Why the number matters
- Per-pound services: your total is based on the weighed laundry, so knowing roughly what you have helps you estimate.
- Minimums: pickup & delivery services often have a minimum order, set in pounds or dollars. The checkout shows the current minimum.
- Washer size: a 20 lb laundromat washer is designed for about this much dry laundry, though loading it loosely gives a better wash.
Bigger amounts
- 40 pounds: typically about four home loads, often a family's week of laundry or a big catch-up pile.
- 60 pounds: a very large pile, or a mix of clothes and bulky bedding.
- 80 pounds and up: the kind of load a single large-capacity laundromat washer is built for, such as several baskets of clothes or a pile of comforters and blankets.
Bedding changes the math
Bulky items can be light for their size. A queen or king comforter is often somewhere around 4 to 10 pounds dry, yet it can fill a home washer by itself. That is why bedding is better judged by volume, and why large washers matter more for comforters than the weight alone suggests.
Weighing at home
If you are curious, step on a bathroom scale holding the bag, then subtract your own weight. It will not be exact, but it gets you close enough to plan.
