What the 80 lb rating means
The rating is roughly how much dry laundry the machine is designed to wash at once. Because a full drum still needs room to tumble, most people get the best results loading an 80 lb washer to about three quarters full, loosely, rather than packing it.
A typical home washer load is often somewhere around 8 to 10 pounds of dry clothes. That is why an 80 lb machine is commonly described as holding about eight household loads in one cycle.
What that looks like
- Several overflowing laundry baskets of everyday clothes.
- A week or two of laundry for a family, if it can all go in the same water temperature.
- A king comforter with room to spare, or two queen comforters.
- Sleeping bags, several blankets, or a large pile of towels and sheets.
When one big load is not the best idea
One washer means one cycle: one water temperature, one detergent, one spin. If your pile includes whites you want washed warm, new dark jeans that may bleed, and delicate items, putting them all in one drum is a compromise. In that case two smaller washers running at the same time usually finish just as fast and treat each group properly.
Very heavy items, such as rugs with rubber backing, can also unbalance a machine. Check the care label and, when in doubt, ask whether the item is suitable for a commercial washer.
Loading tips
- Shake items out as you load them so they do not go in as a single tangled ball.
- Mix large and small items so the weight spreads around the drum.
- Do not wrap long items such as sheets around everything else; they can twist into a rope.
- Use the amount of detergent recommended for a large load in a high-efficiency machine, not a cupful per basket.
Drying an 80 lb load
A full 80 lb washer produces more wet laundry than one dryer of the same nominal size can always handle well. Splitting the load across two dryers often finishes faster than overfilling one, because air needs room to circulate. Commercial washers spin at high speed, which removes much of the water before drying.
Where to find 80 lb washers
